Description

SANTUARIO DE BOCANA

Sitting at 3000 feet above the ocean, just 8 miles from the coast road, this unique 53 acre sanctuary looks at Bocana, a 300 foot waterfall; the bowl shaped valley it inhabits, and long views out towards Cano Island and the sea, from some of the dozen potential house sites.

This property currently has two houses, a garage with a bodega, a storage building, a laundry house, a greenhouse and homes for both the goats and the chickens. There are currently three horses and riding in the area is spectacular. There is a bamboo grove and a cluster of cacao trees. There are many fruit trees. The previous owners ran a coffee farm and banana plantation. There is a well on the property. It is also connected to the community water supply system. There is a seasonal spring-fed pond.
Road frontage surrounds the property and six separate entrances give access to the interior roads.

There are well maintained interior roads and a permaculture influenced agricultural area intended for growing food and raising animals.

The two houses, each custom designed and built, exhibit great charm and character. They are unlike other homes in Perez Zeledon and the Osa. They were a collaboration of the owners with Mick Clement, an English designer, builder, and artist, who resides in the Chirripo area. The wood was mostly sourced locally in the Diamante Valley.

The Bocana (San Luis) waterfall is bordered on both sides by Boracayan, a 2500 acre nature reserve which is amongst the six most diverse bio regions in the country. It is home to howler monkeys, white faced capuchin monkeys, sloth, a jaguar, pumas and other mountain cats, white tailed deer and numerous other animal species. The area is prime for bird watching.

Sanctuaries such as this one, so close to the coast, are seldom to be found and are coveted places.

Another sanctuary, Marino Ballena, the protected marine park and home to the birthplace of humpback whales who arrive each year from both the northern and southern hemispheres at different times adds to the attraction of the area.

For the past twenty years, Santuario de Bocana, has been stewarded with special concern for the beauty and diversity of its natural environment, by the current owners who have only been able to visit it during holiday periods throughout the year.

San Luis Morete is a small village, overlooking the ‘Whale’s Tail’, with friendly inhabitants. It has a school, a clinic, a church, a community salon, a soccer field and a small cafe and provisions store.

The property is now available to new caretakers who share the same values of community
with the natural world.

The asking price is $1.85m.
